Notes from the Director of Coaching: Cam Ormsby

July 9, 2010
Dear OCSA Soccer Family,

I want to continue my regular series of updates from the Director to keep you posted of upcoming events and club news.  The summer is flying by and the season is almost upon us.  We will start club wide training August 4th, 5th, and 6th 6:00-7:30pm.  Once the season opening "mini camp" is complete each team will begin training at their normal site and times.  Your child's coach or manager will notify you of that information.

We are quickly approaching one of our biggest and most exciting projects of the year.  The annual Matt Helms Memorial Tournament is our chance to bring the soccer community to OCSA and showcase our teams and club as well as raise money for our scholarship fund.  We will be calling on the membership to help ensure the tournament runs smoothly.  Parents of each OCSA team will be asked to volunteer time before their child's game.  Since you are at the fields for warm ups anyway, why not pitch in for a bit?  Your manager will fill you in on the details once we get closer to the tournament weekend.  If you would like to volunteer more time we are always looking for help.

On another note, July 1st has passed and club fees are due once again.  Parents of a child on a fall team should have already picked their payment of choice, Check (due July 1st) or bank draft EFT (due July 1st).  The bank draft form and payment schedule are posted on the OCSA web page under the link training fees.  Club fees are due before training to cover the continual cost it takes to run an organization like OCSA.  We have summer costs to keep the fields in top shape along with running the day to day operations of the club.  In an effort to spread fees out, month to month registration was due in early June and the club fees are due starting in July.  We are very sensitive to today's economic environment so with that in mind we encourage each team and their members to brainstorm ways to fund raise.  We have had much success in the past with several teams' fund-raisers not only in raising money but also in fostering team bonding and giving the players some ownership and responsibility for their team and soccer experience.

I look forward to working closely with each of our teams at both trainings and games.  Please stop me at the fields to introduce yourself. Enjoy the rest of the summer and GO CREW!!!

Dear OCSA Soccer Family,

What a great time to be a soccer fan.  I have enjoyed every moment of World Cup action. There has been plenty of attacking play, strategic and gutsy performances by the underdog nations, and even some controversy to keep soccer in the mainstream media.  I can’t wait for the knock out round and see how the tournament unfolds.  We are still in for some exciting games I’m sure.

We have also had some exciting soccer in our own community as well. I would like to congratulate JASA and OCSA on a successful 3v3 tournament in memory of David Heatherly.  The rain showers couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm and determination displayed by the players on Saturday.  I enjoyed playing with some of our staff coaches. I think the kids enjoyed watching their coaches and telling them how the game should be played.  All I can say is “do as I say not as I do”.  I saw some great games as I strolled around the fields, but most of all I enjoyed seeing all the tents with families and teams enjoying a day of soccer together.  Sometimes we forget the experience of youth sports is more than what happens on the field.  It’s the friendships, family time, and life lessons that help make our kids well rounded members of our community.  We would like to say best of luck to any of the teams traveling to Myrtle Beach SC for the National 3v3 finals later this summer.  I thoroughly enjoyed seeing players and families from our community fill the fields and compete for a great cause.  I hope we can continue to support each other as a soccer community.

The summer is in full swing with camps, vacation, beach trips, and no school.  I trust all the players are excited about the up coming season.  Don’t forget in all the excitement of summer to kick the ball around with friends.  The season will be here be for we know it.  Enjoy the World Cup and the rest of your summer.  As always please contact me if there is anything we can do to better serve the membership.

All the best,
Cam Ormsby
