OCSA Training Program for Junior Academy

Junior Academy Training Priorities should focus on the development of individual skill, and individual and small group tactics. Training sessions should place an emphasis on:

Key Objectives for these ages; Players should be able to:

  • Use a wide range of surfaces to control the ball
  • Turn and change direction using a wide range of turns and body surface
  • Receive and Control the ball
  • Pass the ball with the proper weight, accuracy and timing
  • Head the ball using good technique, with the ability to change the flight of the ball
  • Shoot the ball using proper technique with accuracy from the ground and the air
  • Demonstrate and utilize basic combinations in small group play
  • Understand the basic principles of possession and dis-possession - DO NOT GIVE THE BALL AWAY!
  • Demonstrate an understanding of movement with and without the ball
  • Demonstrate and understanding of individual roles within a team

All OCSA teams and the Junior Academy program participate in 2-3 training sessions a week. Weekly training sessions should be designed by the coaching staff to address the above objectives in an active and PRODUCTIVE environment. The following are examples of a weekly training program using 2-3 sessions per week:

  • Dribbling, turning and changing direction. Running with the ball
  • Passing and receiving/turning; short distance
  • Passing and receiving; long distance and flighted balls
  • Heading- defensive and attacking
  • Shooting and Finishing
  • Crossing and Finishing
  • Individual Attacking and Defending; 1 vs. 1
  • Combination play
  • Simple Possession and Shape; 4 vs. 2 6 vs. 4
  • Group/ Team defending; Pressing
  • Group/ Team attacking
  • Transition

All training sessions must incorporate agility and coordination training, individual techinical training, small group/cooperative work and finishing with small sided games; 4 vs. 4, 6 vs. 6 or 8 vs. 8
A typical training session might look like this:

  • Warm- up
  • 15 minutes- Agility, Coordination and speed training
  • 20 minutes- Technical Work, no-pressure/pressure
  • 30 minutes- Skill acquisition/incorporation, problem solving in small sided games; 4 vs. 4, 4 vs. 4 + 4, 6 vs. 4 or functional training
  • 20 minutes- 6 vs. 6, 8 vs. 8- positional play, individual roles and responsibilities, basic tactical understanding & system of play.
  • 5 minutes- Cool down
